Amongst Heroes was one of the five bands playing Underworld tonight. They were the second band on stage and had their backs facing the crowd. Once they began with their intro track, Solstice, I was blown away with the explosion of musical talent! Something that stood out was that there were two vocalists; Nicholas with his throaty backgrounds and Brad with his crisp and clear melodies.
During the set I stood in the middle of the crowd and got a good view of the band. At this point in the night there were about 100 people in the venue walking in and out, observing what was going on around them. Underworld was nicely air conditioned on this hot night, which made the crowd pretty comfortable.
Watching the crowd I noticed a lot of curious faces. I would imagine the pressure was on, opening for a band like Misery Signals. As the set continued, heads began bobbing and people were cheering. The crowd seemed to love these guys! I enjoyed the breakdowns and heavy guitar riffs Dave and Kevin played during their Elegy song. The stage did not seem big enough to hold all the energy for this six piece band. Nicholas promoted their EP release “Solstice” which comes out August 16th, 2013 and really got the crowd pumping by screaming out random demands like “I want to see everyone move!!”.
Amongst Heroes played along with The Kindred, Intervals, Camalus, The Color Morale, and Misery Signals. The cover was twenty dollars and very worth it.
The band has a clean cut look to them; tall, cute boys with short hair, T-shirts and jeans. There is no doubt some ladies were crushing in the audience. The stage presence and overall performance was really fun and entertaining.
Guitarists Dave, Kevin, and Frankie have been playing for about six years. Drummer Daniel has been drumming for nine years. Screamer Nicholas has been singing for four years, and Brad has been singing for fifteen years. The boys taught themselves everything they know!
The band has been together for about a year. The first single they will be releasing from their forthcoming EP “Solstice”, will be The Author which should come out by the end of the summer. “Solstice” will also feature Garret Rapp of The Color Morale.
When I had asked who writes their lyrics and what inspires them, this is what Brad had to say: “The lyrics are written by me and they usually come from whatever I struggle with internally, whether it be dealing with a friend’s depression, falling away from one’s faith, or dealing with the loss of a love one. The end goal and message of the vocals is one of hope; whatever you are struggling with will be difficult, but you can struggle THROUGH it and better yourself in the end.”
