It was like the best moment of your summer all night long at L’Astral, as Andy Black, The Faim and Kulick brought that commercial chorus drop that sends people into the picture perfect slow-mo-jump-at-a-concert moment. The vibe was stuck somewhere between early 2000’s emo-pop-metal and dystopian commercial pop. The crowd could not have been more hyped, and it showed. They gave all three bands what had to have been the best night of their tour, maybe even of their lives.
Kulick was on first and was a mash up of everything ever including trap beats, real drums, keys, drum machines, rock guitars, and a voice as smooth as margarine (can’t believe it’s not butter.) This music was crafted for radio play. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with that, it just seemed like music made to be easily digestible by the common denominator of listener. Take the song “Colors,” for example. Loaded with a huge hook chorus, hip-hop trap beats and the concept of a band, it seems like all kinds of work was put into to loading this song with as many different triggers as possible. Vocalist Jacob Kulick had no troubles delivering clean vocals on pitch and effortlessly. It was very impressive. I have never seen a crowd so excited and amped for an opening act before. A couple of Aussie lads jumped on stage in second place as The Faim. Immediately noticeable was front man Josh Raven’s choice of leopard print pants and what looked to be a jock strap that barely kept itself from tearing through the zipper. Absurd. The Faim also did a great job of roping in the crowd. It was their first time in Montreal and the connection seemed instantaneous. The same nostalgic chorus hooks that Kulick used swept the audience right into the band’s arms. Songs like “Saints of the Sinners” had the crowd juiced-up and engaged. Raven jumped down into the bonanza crowd at one point and soaked it all in. A little heavier on their delivery, The Faim would probably be the modern day equivalent of 80’s hair metal in terms of mojo, song writing, and popular appeal.
Bringing uncontrollable mania to the scene was Andy Black. Another moniker for the Black Veil Brides’ founder and vocalist Andy Six, Black was back solo to punch-pack a stack of tasty snack tracks. Although the mania turned out to be pretty controllable, people were excited to see their favourite front man performing new solo tracks. His new album The Ghost of Ohio dropped in April, so the frenzy was fresh. He played a few tracks off the record including “Westwood Road“. He performed in between two vases filled with black roses with a gravestone behind him. It was like watching a glam version of the Misfits or something. People were into it and got really excited for the acoustic rendition of “Saviour,” a song originally by Black Veil Brides. A huge ovation followed after the show and an encore was definitely warranted. He closed the show with a few more tunes, one of which was the title track to the new record “The Ghost of Ohio.”
