When I arrived at Piranha Bar, the bands were doing sound check and it was half packed upstairs. I didn’t know any of the bands playing, aside from the headliner, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from Caym or any of the other bands. This was one of the last few shows of their Quebec “Rise of the Raven” tour, which they were doing with Trainwreck Architect. It didn’t take long for the first band to start the show, and it was only half an hour behind schedule which is pretty good, considering Piranha Bar shows usually start pretty late.
Caym was second to take the stage and I was blown away at how great they were when they began playing. Their music sounds metal, with a lot of rock influence. It’s heavy and they’re a tight band, they play extremely well together. I have to admit, they were one of the best bands of the night. The song I enjoyed hearing the most was “Rocky Mountain Bear Fucker,” not because of how amusing the title is, but because it was a song that had great guitar solos and an upbeat intro which I enjoyed.
Considering they are from Toronto, I was shocked to see how many fans they had in the crowd wearing their shirts and cheering them on. I was tempted to buy one for myself. The venue had also filled up more by the time Caym started playing and throughout the night, so they had a pretty decent crowd. The bassist seemed to have the most energy and it was entertaining to watch. The vocalist announced that they had a new guitarist, who seemed to fit in well with the rest of the band. They were all really comfortable on stage and seemed excited to be playing in Montreal, claiming that the metal scene in Toronto sucks. I don’t see how that can be possible if a band as great as these guys emerged from there. I’m just glad they brought their music here, to Montreal.
A few friends of mine kept telling me how good these guys were and how much they enjoyed watching them play and I have to agree with them. This was one of the few shows at Piranha Bar that I actually enjoyed because Caym was new to me, and they’re not just like every other band doing the same old music. They have something unique, I’m not sure what exactly but they are different from most bands. Musically, these guys are insanely talented and I would see them live again if I had the chance. I don’t think I can even express just
how much talent these guys have, especially the guitarist/lead vocalist and the drummer. Although, I can easily say they have as much talent as the bassist has energy. I don’t think I’ve had this much fun at a show in a while.
