The Horny Bitches – Heart ‘n’ Guts

The Horny Bitches of Montreal have been slashing apart modern concepts of fashion and beauty since their inception in 2007.  Their latest effort, Heart ‘n’ Guts, is eleven songs of filthy lyrics and raging guitars.

I gave the opening track “Ripe & Tight” a listen and knew immediately it was for me.  The riff was rocking and it had those crusty undertones that is a staple of Montreal’s scene.  It begins with rock and roll inspired guitar and switches gears for a grungier chorus.  The abrasive vocals give this song a lot of edge.  Not just the suggestive lyrical content but the rasp and screams.

On the second track, the Bitches explore various vocalists; three distinct voices can be heard and rather than seeming muddled, it comes off well-arranged.

The first few songs have that thrash-y trashiness one would expect from a band with the formerly mentioned name.  The fourth song, “Think Like a Dick,” stands out as a change of pace.  The riff is nearing on rockabilly and the guitar tone used on the verses is raw and warming to the ears, all the while keeping with the offensive lyrics and filth that are a staple of the porn punk genre.

“All You Can Eat” has a great rhythm and a catchy hook.  The guitar in “In Cock We Thrust” is cool and the lyrics, well, I can’t help but smirk. “Fists of Fury” is a great tune, full of rage and energy.  The real surprise came on the title track, where the girls go melodic for the verses.  The vocal harmonies are good but I like when it deepens in the chorus, and the ‘whoas’ later in the song are awesome.  Not to mention the cool solo to finish ‘er off.

I felt at times the attempts at melody seemed a little forced or contrived, such as on songs like, “Daddy Issues.”  This writer felt the album would have been better if they had tried for more shouting and less melody or perhaps if the third song was placed further back on the album.

In closing, I really enjoyed listening to this album.  Listen to it in the car, the driving guitars will be good company on the highway.  You can order Heart ‘n’ Guts and all of the their material here.
