Montreal pop-rock band, The Willing, released The Dirt EP, containing four tracks, each one different from the last, and a thirteen-second intro that had me in tears the first time I listened to it due to it being so randomly hilarious and pointless . I had no idea what to expect, but it definitely wasn’t that…and yet I still can’t help but laugh every time I hear it.
The intro flows into the song “Last year,” which happens to be my favourite track off the EP. Maybe because it reminds me of old school rock music, or maybe because the guitar instrumentals in this song are so upbeat and fun, that it lifts my mood almost instantly. It’s a fun fast paced rock song combined with vocals that are more on the pop side, but when blended in with the music, creates something different and unique. The beginning of this track, however, sounds like it belongs as part of the random intro, it fits right in. I think this is the gem of the EP, it’s a song that makes you want to both head-bang and dance at the same time, so I believe it would appeal to different audiences.
Following that is “America” which is more on the pop side. To be honest I found some parts to be a little strange. There’s just some unknown, weird sounds that don’t really fit in, but it makes the song more interesting.
Last but not least, is their song “Better” which is ridiculously different from the other songs, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I find that it’s more mellow and laid back, with a couple of faster paced tempos in it here and there. It’s a lot softer, and falls kind of between rock and pop, as it changes back and forth between the two genres.
All in all, The Willing released one hell of an EP, and the fact that they’re from my hometown makes it that much better. The Dirt EP is basically an album to listen to when you just need to let loose and have fun because that’s what it sounds like they were doing when they recorded it. I hope to hear more music like this from them in the future.
